New Eligibility Rules for the National Baldrige Award

The national Baldrige Program has recently enacted some changes to its Award eligibility rules that leverage the larger “Baldrige enterprise”—in particular, state Baldrige-based award programs like Wisconsin Forward Award.

The decision by Congress to eliminate federal funding for the national Baldrige Program is causing the Program to adopt a new business model. With the larger Baldrige enterprise in mind, the national Baldrige Program is enacting changes to the eligibility requirements that will formalize the de facto feeder system that currently exists between state award programs and the national award program. Starting in 2012, in order to be eligible for the national award, organizations must meet the existing requirements AND one of the following conditions:

  • Be a previous Baldrige Award recipient
  • Have received the top-tier award from state award program within the past five years
  • Have received a site visit at the national level within the past five years
  • Have received a combined scoring band range of eight or better (e.g., process band 4 and results band 4) in the past five years
  • Have 25% or more of your employees/staff outside of your organization’s home state
  • Have no state program available for your organization

There are additional details available on the award application website: http://www.nist.gov/baldrige/publications/award_application.cfm

Wisconsin Forward Award application and Examiner training have always been aligned with the national Baldrige program.  We look forward to new ways to collaborate with the Baldrige program, as well as other state-level programs, in order to better serve Wisconsin organizations.  Information about the various starter application levels (Challenger, and the Wisconsin Fast Forward), as well as the 50 page narrative application process, can be found on our websiteor by contacting the WCPE staff.
